Signs Your Air Duct Needs Maintenance

06/25/2014 Back To Blog

Air duct maintenance is not something that needs to be done regularly, compared to other household features, like overhead garage doors. It does not always need constant attention because the way it works is that it transfers and ventilates air all around the home. Due to this fact, the longevity of your duct system is guaranteed – except perhaps when it comes to air filter cleaning, which requires more attention than the rest. Considering how complicated it can be sometimes to perform HVAC maintenance, most people are thankful that it does not have to be done too often.

However, there are times when the air ventilation system does indeed need proper maintenance – and the most difficult part about it is that it follows no real routine. All you can do is inspect and make sure that everything is always in working order. However, if you do not know what you are looking for then things can get very difficult. Here are some signs that home air duct cleaning is necessary.

If there is mold found in the vents

This can be rather alarming as the presence of mold in the vents often mean that the air has been circulating its bacteria for quite some time. As soon as you spot this problem, it is best to immediately attempt mold removal.

If there are pests found in the vents

This can range from creepy crawlies all the way to small animals. The worst that could happen is that a small animal could die while still in the duct system, putrefying the ventilation system and making the smell all around very unpleasant. Pests should be taken care of the same you would take care of mold – it needs to be removed immediately (and perhaps home air filter cleaning).

Naturally, any kind of debris present in the duct system should also be removed, but take care not to damage the ducts while doing so. After all, they are only hollowed tubes and will not be able to take more than a dent.
